Revisiting 9/11: What Did 9/11 Teach Us?
Perhaps nothing has shaken the foundation of our country like the terrorism of 9/11. What has been the impact? What are we learning from this event? What is a faithful Christian response in a time of national crisis?
Tom Mockaitis, professor at DePaul University and Radio/TV political commentator, was here last year with much acclaim to help us deal with this tragedy and now we invite him back to revisit the issues raised.

The Gospel of Matthew: The Jesus Alternative
We are tempted to forget how radical the life and wisdom of Jesus is to common place assumptions about what makes a happy life. We will do a four week exploration into the alternative way of life that Jesus, the sage of Matthew’s gospel, offers to us. How is Christianity tied to the Old Testament? How are we to take Jesus’ enigmatic Sermon on the Mount and his unpredictable parables? What is the meaning of his death and resurrection as Matthew understood it?
September 22, Dr. Ken Stone from CTS will come to explore roots of Jewish thought in Matthews gospel. Dr. Stone was one of our most appreciated presenters last year and is professor of Old Testament at Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS).
September 29, October 13, and 20, Dr. Tot-Siong (Benny) Liew New Testament professor of CTS will be our instructor.

Business and Ethics: Being Faithful in Under Pressure
Perhaps it is easy as people removed from the situation to think we would act different had we been employees at Enron, Anderson, or MCI. But would we? What are the business pressures that challenge our ethics and our conscious?
We are fortunate to have WBEZ Resident Philosopher and Loyola professor Al Gini for our first session on "Business Ethics and Trust." Al has an excellent book out called "My Job, My Self" and a new book, " In Praise of Play" will be out this Spring.
On October 27, two of our own nationally known business leaders, Arthur and Betsy Holden, will be talking about both the pressure of living a family life and maintaining a high profile job and challenges of ethics in the work place.

J.R.R. Tolkien and Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers Movie
Just in time for the movie, we have invited Dr. Christopher Mitchell, authority on J.R.R. Tolkien, to help us explore the magical, whimsical, and telling mysteries of the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien was a contemporary of C.S. Lewis and like him, told some of the best tales ever told and integrated into them hints at the story of faith with such themes as the clash between good and evil. Come help us uncover some of those themes.

Christianity and the Movies: Faith Brought to Life
Christian/Judaic influences shape our experience of the world in ways we take for granted. How do we find such themes in the movies? What are some films that have faith overtones and have influenced the way we look at life?
For the first week, we are fortunate to have Jonathan Miller, film critic for WBEZ, to explore these ideas. The movie, the "Decalogue", will be the focus of our discussion.
Staff will lead the second session with their pick of a movie. We will provide the popcorn and soda.

Being Poor in America: A Look at What We Are Learning about Faith and Poverty
Last August the Mission Doing committee and our church helped Sentoria Williams and her family move from a dangerous Westside neighborhood to Evanston and also to find new employment and a better school for her kids.
On December 8, Sunday morning (9:00 a.m.) Adult Education will take a look at what we, as relatively affluent, middle-class persons have learned about the issues of poverty and also about our faith. What assumptions about poverty and our culture have been turned upside down? How has faith played a vital role in our work? What have we learned about ourselves in this ministry? Come hear an exciting and informative report on one of WCC ministries.

Relishing the Sounds of the Season
One of our annual holiday traditions has been to draw upon the wisdom of Peter Cosyns so that we may hear and fully appreciate the wonderful music of Christmas.
This year Peter will share with us several advent carols and something about their origin and history. This is not to be missed! This is one of the ways to make the Christmas season a meaningful, vital experience of faith.
