Back to Council Main
Councilors present: Kimberly Brya, Steve Dyer, Carol Fessler, Georgie
Geraghty, Betsy Holden, Steve Huels, Will McLean, Peggy McNamara, and Jodie
Stewart.
Councilors absent: John Bausch, Susan Gillette, Chris Hurley and Sarah Woodburn.
Pastors and Staff Attending: Joseph Shank, Connie Stewart, Jenny Gleichauf and
Floy Schrage.
Preliminary Matters
Steve Dyer, Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. Interim Associate
Pastor Connie Stewart offered an opening prayer after which the cares and
concerns of the congregation were shared.
A motion to approve the May 9, 2006 Council minutes was made by Kimberly Brya,
seconded by Jodie Stewart. Approval was unanimous.
Treasurer Will McLean reported that we are in a period where we have a head
start on the budget due to the number of pre-paid pledges received. To date
approximately 36% of the budget has been expended. Business Manager Floy Schrage
commented that expenses are usually down in the summer months. Betsy Holden
asked if church attendance has dropped since Easter. Senior Pastor Joseph Shank
replied that attendance has remained about the same but he would get numbers for
her.
Old Business
Worship Councilors Carol Fessler and Steve Huels requested that Council take
action on the request from the Music Committee, made at the May 9, 2006 Council
meeting, regarding the status of the church’s pianos. Carol Fessler moved,
seconded by Jodie Stewart, that the Helms Piano be rebuilt. Since the Music
Committee’s report has a range of costs between $21,000 and $34,000 for repair
of the Helms piano, a discussion as to the specific amount to be approved for
the repairs followed. Kimberly Brya offered an addition to the original motion
authorizing the expenditure of up to $30,000 for the repair of the Helms piano.
Thus the motion before Council for a vote read: that Council approves the
rebuilding of the Helms piano with an authorized expenditure up to $30,000.
There were 7 votes in favor, I opposed and I abstainer.
Betsy Holden asked Will McLean where the money for the repair of the Helms piano
would come from. He replied that it would come out of the CIR (Collective
Investment Reserves). Kimberly Brya remarked that the church has operated at a
deficit for the last few years and that the requested funds for piano repairs
should have been bundled into the Sanctuary Renewal Project. (Will McLean noted
that the Church had run surpluses for the last two years.) She reminded that we
need to be good stewards our dollars. Georgie Geraghty asked what happens if the
dollars needed for the Sanctuary Renewal Project are not raised. Will McLean
responded the issue would come back to Council. Steve Dyer then commented that
perhaps the issue of the care of capital assets should be referred to the
Executive Committee for discussion.
New Business
Betsy Holden, Education Councilor, presented the draft for guidelines pertaining
to the care of children during non-worship congregational activities. Childcare
will continue to be offered on Sunday mornings, at Congregational meetings and
new member orientation. The proposed process for requesting childcare for events
other than Sunday morning is to have each respective committee be responsible
for securing childcare for their event. Betsy Holden moved, seconded by Will
McLean, that the Council adopt the recommendations of the Children’s Ministry
for childcare for non-worship congregational activities as presented. Approval
was unanimous. As some concern regarding the church’s legal liability regarding
the care of children on its premises (state mandated abuse reporting, background
check of childcare personnel, etc.) the Executive Committee and Personnel will
look into this issue further.
A first review of the Church Calendar for 2006-2007 year followed.
Closing Items
Associate Pastor Jenny Gleichauf called attention to the Mission Giving
hand-out. The Chair reminded everyone to take note of the upcoming dates listed
on back of the agenda, especially the Bach program by Director of Music Randy
Manges on Wednesday evenings June 14, 21 and 28 as well as the Austin Girls
Choir on June 29.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:37 p.m. after a
closing prayer by Pastor Gleichauf.
Respectfully submitted,
Peggy McNamara, Clerk
