Preliminary Matters

Connie Stewart presented the current cares and concerns of our congregation regarding health issues and other stressful matters. Steve Dyer acknowledged that this is the sixth anniversary of the attack on the United States by Al Qaeda, and that we still have thousands of people in harms way in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Joe Shank announced a new Adult Enrichment opportunity for this year to be put on by the Center for Christian Leadership, under the auspices of the Chicago Theological Seminary, with the cooperation of four area churches, including WCC. A six-week session will cost $300.00 and require pre-paid registration and required minimum enrollment. There will be a weekly lecture, computer sessions, and homework requirements. This is intended as a serious adult Christian education offering, and information is currently being distributed to our congregation and to the general public.

A correction to the minutes of the July 10th Council meeting was made by Jenny Gleichauf, Kimberly Brya moved and Bob Linn seconded that the minutes be approved as corrected. Approval unanimous.

Treasurer Kimberly Brya handed out the Variance Report, ending August 31st She asked that one councilor in each group serve with her on the budget committee which will be meeting in November. She pointed out that our pledge income is on track. Expenditure-wise, she acknowledged that how the dollars flow during the course of a year is important information for councilors to have, and she is working on providing this information The fact that Council has spent 343% of its income already can be explained by survey costs and pastoral search committee expenditures. There was discussion about the timing of pledge phone calls and it was requested that leadership pledges be made by the end of September.

Business

Fall kick-off review: There were good feelings generally about the service on Sept. 9th~ The “egress issue”, which was a non-issue for some people, will be examined by staff for improvement. Joe reminded us that with one service, some subsequent services will “feel” different, as both traditional and non-traditional styles are implemented. There needs to be some way developed to collect for the pastors the names of new people attending services during the next five week& The church school had 95 children attending, out of 108 enrolled, which is very good, and the Servants are also off to a promising start. Next Sunday we will be unloading a moving van full of organ parts and pipes and carrying them into the Narthex during the fellowship hour. We were reminded that parishioners must stay out of the sanctuary during this process. Work is not yet complete enough for extensive foot traffic.

Community and commitment task forces: Because community and commitment are important aspects of church membership, we need to provide a structure for considering ideas and having discussions among members of the congregation about how all members can “find their niches” and participate actively in the life and work of WCC. How can we avoid the perception of “winners and losers” in decisions that are made? How can we remove barriers that members feel they must overcome in order to participate? How can we develop constructive actions? Councilors need to be involved as leaders, but the task forces are intended to provide all members with an opportunity to be heard. Councilors were asked to think about people in their respective groups who might be interested in this opportunity to serve.

Please remind your group that the fall leadership meeting will be held from 8:30 to 11:00AM on
Saturday, September 29th in Tolman Hall.

The pastoral search committee is still interviewing candidates and will have a report when these
interviews are completed.

Jack Jadel gave a brief Support Group report, with a handout containing information about pastoral search committee activities, Covenant Society activities, and the shortfall in the Sanctuary Renewal project. He also distributed a letter from the HOC board president regarding a financial proposal. This proposal will be referred to the Financial Management Committee for review.

The meeting was adjourned after a closing prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Jodie Stewart, Acting Secretary for Peggy McNamara
