PRELIMINARIES

Pastoral Cares and Concerns
Pastoral cares and concerns of the Congregation were shared by Pastor Bill Mueller, Pastor Jenny Gleichauf and Pastor Joseph Shank.

Pastoral Reports
Reports from Pastors Shank, Gleichauf and Mueller were shared updating Council on recent activities related to call and caring, education, worship, outreach, and nurture.

Pastor Shank shared with Council how blessed we are by the spirit of cooperation and generosity. Examples include the following:

- All gifts for the Wish Tree have been filled; many members will provide food and plan to attend the party at the Good News Soup to deliver the Wish Tree gifts.
- $840 was raised for phone cards for US soldiers on Sunday, December 6
- WCC hosted the Interfaith Service on Thanksgiving Eve with 260 in attendance and 62 people sang in the choir
- Approximately 250 people attended the Organ Recital by Randy Manges on November 23

Pastor Shank noted that there is now a new cross for the sanctuary. The cross, custom made by the artist who designed and completed the wood carvings for the organ, symbolizes birth, death and resurrection.

Chair, Susan Gillette, expressed gratitude to our Pastors for their outstanding leadership and service. She commented that the commitment and engagement of the Congregation seems to be increasing, thanks to their efforts and inspiration.

November 11 Minutes
Treasurer, Clyde McGregor, moved that the November 11, 2008 Council minutes be approved. Education Councilor, Betsy Holden, seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

BUSINESS

Canvass Update
David Blake, Canvass Co-Chair, provided an update on this year’s Canvass activities. Results to date are encouraging, despite the difficult economic environment. To date, Canvass has gratefully received 2009 pledges totaling $608,000. Canvass is asking members of the congregation to submit their pledges for 2009 by December 31, 2008.

To complete the Canvass drive, the following actions were agreed to:
- In December, Councilors will contact members of their leadership group who have not yet submitted their 2009 pledges.
- Two status updates on Canvass will be included in the Messenger in December.
- Additional mailings and follow up contacts to members who have not made 2009 pledges will follow in January.

Council thanked David and Carol Blake for their leadership, commitment and service for this year’s Canvass.

Treasurer’s Report
Clyde McGregor, Treasurer, provided a brief financial update for November. Unlike October, financial results for November were positive. Year to date through November, there is only a deficit of $1,000 and 88% of 2008 pledge dollars have been received.

Organ Update
Pastor Shank informed Council that repairs will be needed on the woods and leathers on the organ pipes before the Christmas Eve services. All repair costs will be paid for by Martin Pasi. Pastor Shank acknowledged and thanked Elaine Clemens for her extra effort on this.

Leadership Roles
Worship Group suggested that there is an opportunity to increase the visibility and interactions of the church’s lay leadership (Exec and Council members) with the congregation. Council is encouraged to arrive early to worship services and/or attend fellowship to welcome attendees. It is particularly important to do this with members or guests that you do not know. New name tags will be available in January.

Quorum Recommendation
It was agreed that a new recommendation for what constitutes a quorum will be included for consideration at the February 8 Congregational meeting. Worship Councilor, Peggy McNamara, will discuss the recommendation with Exec and Council in January.

Deferred Giving and Restricted Fund
Support Councilor, Jack Jadel, provided a brief update on Deferred Giving and a new Restricted Fund. The purpose of these two giving options is to build additional sources of income, including an endowment, for the Church. Jack expressed thanks to Pete Henderson and Mike Walther for their work on these items.

It was agreed that a brief update on these new options will be included in the February 8 Congregational meeting and a detailed update would be provided to Council in the Spring.

February 8 Congregational Meeting
A Congregational meeting will be held after the worship service on Sunday, February 8. If possible, the worship service and/or fellowship should be designed so that as many members as possible can attend the meeting.

Future Meetings
Council agreed on the following future meetings and topics:
December 18 – Budget Meeting
January 13 – Council Meeting; Financial and Canvass updates; Quorum recommendation discussion
February 3 – Leadership Meeting; topics and format TBD
February 8 – Congregational Meeting; Budget approval; Deferred Giving and Restricted Fund Update; Quorum recommendation for consideration

The meeting adjourned at 9:06pm, followed by a closing prayer offered by Pastor Joseph Shank.

Respectfully submitted,

Peggy Dyer, Clerk
