Opening Prayer and Gathering
Before the beginning of the business portion of the Council meeting, Council
members, pastors and staff gathered in Little Chapel for worship and prayer at
7:00 p.m.
Preliminary Matters
The Chair, Steve Dyer, called the meeting to order at 7:25 p.m. and then
moved approval of the May 13, 2008 Council minutes. Jodie Stewart seconded the
motion. Approval was unanimous.
Pastoral concerns of the congregation were shared by the pastors.
Floy Schrage, Business/Facilities Manager, reported that the church’s financial
affairs are on track.
Jenny Gleichauf, Associate Pastor, called Council members’ attention to the
Mission Giving allocation sheet available at the meeting. The actual fund
amounts are not posted publicly – only the names of the organizations receiving
them. She also reminded councilors to contact their groups for names of
individuals to pass on to the Nominating Committee for lay leadership
consideration. Also, she urged councilors to thank all group members for serving
and to ask for any feed back.
Business
Senior Pastor Joseph Shank gave a brief overview of past and current staff
allocation for Christian Education. Over the decade of the nineties various
staffing models existed – including part-time youth workers, a part-time
Director of Christian Education as well as pastoral involvement. For the past
two years there has been a church school coordinator, a part- time youth person
and pastoral presence.
Education Councilors Betsy Holden and Georgie Geraghty informed Council that
more pastoral time needs to be allocated to the church school program. There is
also a need for more pastoral presence among the church school families in order
to support a strong church school program. They also reported that a review of
our current church school curriculum is in progress since the shelf- life of a
curriculum seems to be around three years. Currently it is difficult to recruit
church volunteers due, in part, to the lack of a defined curriculum. In view of
this, a review of the church school program seems timely. Council then moved to
a discussion of the various issues related to the church school program. In the
discussion Betsy Holden also pointed out that in the 2008-2009 program year
church school will be moving to a cooperative model. There are plans to hold an
organizational meeting to discuss the cooperative model and spell out what this
entails on the part of the parents. Over the summer a committee will also be
looking over the curriculum. The notion of having a floating teacher was
advanced. There being no further discussion, Bob Linn, Support Councilor, moved
that Council support the cooperative model . After a second, the motion was
unanimously approved.
A review of the 2008-2009 Events Calendar Draft was deferred until the July 8th
Council meeting.
Brek Peterson, Outreach Councilor, reported on the progress of meetings he has
attended exploring the creation of a Family Promise program in our area. Family
Promise is a nationwide program designed to help low income families achieve
lasting independence and redress underlying causes of poverty and homelessness.
So far there have been two community meetings involving ten congregations. The
next step in bringing this program to fruition is the creation of a Board of
Trustees. Before continuing on in this endeavor, Brek wanted to know if WCC is
still interested in participating in the Family Promise program. Council’s
response was in the affirmative. A motion to confirm WCC's further
participation in the Family Promise program was made by Brek Petersen, seconded
by Jodie Stewart. Approval was unanimous.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m. followed by a closing prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Peggy McNamara, Clerk
