The meeting of the Council was called to order by the Chair, Susan Gillette, at 9:06pm. Susan thanked Council for their leadership, energy and passion during the Group Leadership meeting from 7:00 – 9:00pm that evening.

PRELIMINARIES
Bob Linn, Support Councilor, moved acceptance of the September 8, 2009 Council meeting minutes. Jodie Stewart, Worship Councilor, seconded. The minutes were approved.

BUSINESS
Treasurer’s Report
Clyde McGregor, Treasurer, provided a brief financial update. He informed the Council that the Church will have a deficit of approximately $30,000 in 2008. In addition, 2009 will be a difficult year for the Church financially due to the economic environment, a full staffing model, increased energy costs and the added expense of capital fund interest payments.

To establish the 2009 Operating Budget, each Group submitted their recommended Budget Committee representative immediately following the meeting. The Budget Committee, according to the Bylaws, is responsible for preparing and recommending a budget to Council for their approval; the chair of the Budget Committee is selected by the Committee. Each Group will be asked how to allocate their funds without any increases in budget.

Canvass Update
Council discussed the importance of this year’s Canvass with David Blake, Canvass Co-Chair. It was agreed that your pledge this year matters more than ever. Chair, Susan Gillette, reminded Council that the tradition of WCC has been that when the Church has faced difficult times, we have responded with extravagant generosity. Pastor Shank’s sermon on September 28 eloquently explained the importance of this legacy to the congregation.

Input was gathered from Council on the overall approach, the financial target, the communications messages and tone, and timing for this year’s Pledge Drive. It was agreed that November 9, 2009 will be Stewardship Sunday.

By next Wednesday, October 22, the key message points for Canvass, including the financial target, will be determined by Steve Huels (Congregational Co-Chair), Clyde McGregor (Treasurer), Bob Linn (Support Co-Chair) and David Blake (Canvass Co-Chair).
