Peterson (part time), Jodie Stewart, Carla Voorhees
Councilors absent: Susan Gillette, Jack Jadel
Pastors and staff present: Josh Sawyer, Joseph Shank, Floy Schrage
The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair, Steve Huels, at 7:08pm. Pastor
Joseph Shank began with an opening poem "Ponds" and prayer.
PRELIMINARIES
Council welcomed Nurture Councilor, Carla Voorhees, to her first Council
meeting.
Cares and Concerns of the Congregation were shared by Pastor Joseph Shank.
Pastoral reports were distributed updating Council on recent activities related
to call and caring, education, worship, outreach and nurture.
Director for Youth, Josh Sawyer, updated Council on the Youth and Servants
programs. A lock in is planned for Labor Day weekend with 10 other churches, and
there will be new 5th and 6th grade pre-confirmation class programming beginning
this fall. Josh's hours with WCC have been increased so that he can increase his
focus on youth and servants.
Pastor Joseph Shank informed Council that all teaching positions for Church
school have been filled and Nicole Nova has been hired as Church School
Coordinator. Pastor Shank reflected on the past year and believes the focus over
the next year needs to be on financial health and increasing participation. He
noted that attendance at worship has been down overall (down seven out of the
past ten months), church school attendance up slightly, youth participation down
slightly and choir participation down. The pastors will identify people who have
been less active so that pastors and lay leadership can reach out and reinforce
that their presence at WCC makes a difference.
Worship Councilor, Jodie Stewart, moved that the June 9, 2009 Council minutes be
approved. Nurture Councilor, Bill McKay, seconded. The minutes were approved.
BUSINESS
Treasurer's Report
Treasurer, Clyde McGregor, provided a brief financial update. Revenues,
specifically pledge income, is being received as expected. Expenses for June
reflect distribution of Outreach funds. The only major area of concern is the
lack of memorial gifts (other income) that WCC has received this year.
Encouragingly, 58 responses have been received from the summer pledge drive and
an additional $21,800 has been received. This reduces the current projected
deficit to ~$50,000. Council agreed that an additional email blast should be
sent this summer to solicit additional funds and/or pledges.
2009/2010 Events Calendar
Pastor Joseph Shank shared a draft of the Events Calendar for the upcoming
church year. Council agreed that the Congregational meetings will be on
February 7, 2010 and May 16, 2010.
Dates for several events still need to be determined: 2009/2010 Helms Award,
GCFD Food drive/sorting, Family Promise launch and 2 organ recitals. Council
will issue a separate calendar that will include dates for Leadership meetings
and the May Council meeting.
Vice Chair, Steve Huels, presented a motion to approve the 2009/2010 Events
Calendar. Support Councilor, Bob Linn, moved that it be approved and Treasurer,
Clyde McGregor, seconded. The Events Calendar was approved.
Wilfrid Helms Award
Council deferred the selection process for the recipients of the 2008/2009
Wilfrid Helms award to get more input from their committees and the
Congregation. Councilors need to submit one name per group for this year's award
with supporting rationale by August 31. Requests for nominations from the
Congregation will be included in the Messenger. It was agreed that the award
will be presented during the September 27, 2009 worship service.
2009/2010 Suggestions
Vice Chair, Steve Huels, asked for ideas and thoughts for the upcoming church
year. Ideas included invite a family, bring guests to the new family dinners,
promote kick off Sunday, senior/junior interactions/stories, need for additional
choir members, and promote WCC outreach to the community.
Action Items
Vice Chair, Steve Huels, shared action items and current status. He reminded
Council that there will not be an August meeting and the next Council meeting
will be on September 8, 2009.
The meeting adjourned at 9:14pm and was followed by a closing prayer led by Josh
Sawyer.
Respectfully submitted,
Peggy Dyer
Clerk
