For centuries, Christian family life has revolved around the church.
Their children are baptized. There they learn the ways of Christian living. There they worship. There they marry.
And for ages families have preferred to bury their dead close to the church where they and their families before them have worshiped.
No portrait of our own country would be complete without including the simple beauty and dignity found in the New England Churchyard.
How fitting then it is that the ashes of those who have found solace, joy and inspiration in Winnetka Congregational Church be interred in its Churchyard.
|
It is a place of quiet beauty. It is a place where families may easily visit and find comfort. It is a place where the story of life and immortality is retold each year in the blossoming of spring.
Upon completion of Harkness Hall in 1954, the Board of Trustees recommended the conversion of the then unkempt slope east of the Church into a Churchyard. The plan was approved by the congregation in 1956.
|
Only ashes of a cremation may be interred in the Churchyard. Only a member of Winnetka Congregational Church may request a permit for the interment of his or her own ashes and those of deceased members of the family.
Plots are identified by memorial tablets set in the adjacent walls. Plots are available for nine, four, three and two interments. A plan of the Churchyard showing the available plots may be seen in the Church office.

The Churchyard is maintained through The Churchyard Fund, created to ensure perpetual care of the Churchyard and is administered by the Church Council. Contributions for the benefit of the Churchyard or for approved memorials are welcome.
