Christmas Offering
This year’s Christmas offering will benefit Family Promise Chicago North Shore
and Common Hope.
Family Promise Chicago North Shore, Inc. (FPCNS) provides services for
families in homeless situation. Their main focus is to help families with
children in need get back into permanent and sustainable housing and employment.
By working at our Day Center and through cooperating congregations we provide:
Temporary housing
Job placement counseling
Assistance finding permanent housing
Meals
Access to services through our cooperating organizations
A Family Promise network utilizing religious facilities and volunteers is a cost
efficient way to provide children and families shelter, hospitality, and a way
out of a homeless situation. A Local Family Promise Network is a Highly
Efficient Way to Help Families Avoid the Downward Spiral of Homelessness.
Winnetka Congregational Church is a founding partner of FPCNS and we are deeply
involved with their work and ministry.

Common Hope promotes hope and opportunity in Guatemala,
partnering with children, families, and communities who want to participate in a
process of development to improve their lives through education, health care,
and housing. It is this comprehensive approach to human development that is
critical in helping families and communities reach their full human potential.
This year Common Hope has made it possible for over 3000 students to attend
elementary through university schools. Its clinic averaged 588 patient visits
each month, while its dentist saw 352 people. Seventeen new homes were
constructed, while member families worked a total of 4748 sweat-equity hours to
earn those houses, and other home improvements. Common Hope social workers made
an average of 462 home visits each month to their 1563 partner families to
assess and assist them.
For 12 years, Winnetka Congregational Church has been an active
supporter of Common Hope through annual mission trips to Guatemala, by
sponsoring special funding events, building a computer center, and through
members’ sponsorships of children. WCC was also active in initiating the
cultural exchange between New Hope School and Hibbard Wood School, Winnetka. For
more information please visit the Common Hope website at

Thank you to all who donated all of the 300
gifts to our Wish Tree project. Thank you to the 50+ members of WCC who
joined together to deliver all 300 wish tree gifts to A Just Harvest. We
had a great time! The guests enjoyed the cookies, treats, cider and
milk. The families loved making a few crafts of their own. Every family
was so grateful for the gifts they received. One family in particular
gave us a letter to share with the congregation.
It reads:

What:
A weekend of relaxation after the holidays and a time for reflection - a
feasting of the soul. Rev. Jenny Gleichauf will lead our time together as a
group. Anna Argeropoulos will be with us to provide several (optional) yoga
classes. There will be plenty of free time so you may read, nap, walk the
grounds, talk with other women or anything else you’d enjoy. The food is
wonderful, the company rich, the discussion deep, the experience memorable.
Where:
Holy Wisdom Monastery in Madison, WI. Your own room and bathroom. Meals
prepared by a private chef. A superb library available, lovely sitting
rooms, a small and quiet chapel for prayer and meditation.
When:
Friday, January 13 to Sunday, January 15.
Carpooling available.
Who: Up to 18 women of WCC.
Our cost will vary depending on
how many women sign up, but the most it will cost is $225 for two nights
stay plus all your meals and any materials. E-mail or call Rev. Jenny
Gleichauf if you would like to attend. Remember, spaces are limited and it
is first come, first serve.

Children's Gift Fair-A Great Success!
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make our annual Children’s gift
fair such a success! A special thanks to Leslie Shank who put in a tremendous
amount of work to make sure we had quality, creative, fun crafts. Children had
the opportunity to make marble necklaces, pencil bags, earrings, dog biscuit
mix, tea jars, hand dipped Oreos and more. It is always such a joy to see all of
our church school children having such a good time!

DON’T GO UNKNOWN!
If you or a family member plan to be or are hospitalized, contact the
church office at 441-3400, or email any of the pastors.
When Grief Comes Home for the Holidays
If you've recently lost a loved one, your first
holiday without them can be like opening up a painful wound all over
again. Holidays, which are traditional times to gather together with
family and friends, can be an annual painful reminder of someone who
isn't with you anymore.
For practical information on the "Do’s" and "Don’t’s" of supporting our
family and friends, we suggest this
link.
Do you have prayerful joys or concerns you’d
like listed on your WCC Prayer List?
