JAZZ VESPERS II
Back by popular demand!
                           $10 donation

Plan to join us here at WCC for Jazz Vespers II on Sunday afternoon, February 12, at 4 p.m. This program’s featured artists will be the Victor Goines Quartet. Victor Goines is a charter and current member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (under the direction of Wynton Marsallis) and is well-known as a saxophone and clarinet virtuoso.

He is also Professor of Music and director of Northwestern University’s Jazz Studies Program. An added feature to this program will be the return of Tammy McCann to perform with the Quartet. Many of you will recall the memorable event that took place last February when we initiated our Jazz Vespers series featuring vocalist Tammy McCann and her jazz ensemble.

This is an event that you will not want to miss!

Very Good News!

Strong Finish – Great Start

We did it – we finished 2011 balanced – speaking financially! An exceptionally strong influx of contributions in December made all the difference. Thank you for your contributions in 2011. Member contributions represented almost 80% of total income. Thank you for fulfilling your pledges. Thank you for keeping WCC healthy and vibrant.

But it gets better - we’ve had a great 2012 pledge drive so far. Never have we entered a New Year with such a strong position. We’re over $865,000 in pledged contributions already. Almost 40% of this year’s pledges are increases! Thank you for the timely and generous response. Your pledges have enabled the WCC Council to prepare a sound budget for 2012 (more on the budget next week).

Now we need to finish strong – we need to raise another $85,000 in pledges to meet our $950,000 goal. This is an ambitious goal – but it is achievable. By securing comprehensive and sufficient commitments now, we only do this once. No "Summer Pledge Drive"! By getting to our budgeted $950,000 in pledged contributions now, we can plan our programs and outreach donations with confidence. We can have a bigger positive impact on our church and our community.

Here is how you can help. If you have not pledged, please do. Please be a full active member through your participation in our church’s financial health. If you have pledged below our $3,000 target level, please consider raising your pledge if you are able to do so. More of us need to do more to maintain our financial health over the long term.

Membership – it’s a two-way street. We improve our strength and vibrancy when we all pitch in. Thank you for your support of our congregation.

Adult Enrichment

Tell me the stories of Jesus!

Sundays, through - February 19
9 a.m. - 9:50 a.m. in the Centennial Room

Jesus told them, "A farmer went out to scatter seed…" In that spirit and our commitment to the various ministries of Winnetka Congregational Church, your Adult Enrichment team invites you to any or all sessions in our current series on "The Parables of Jesus."

We meet Sunday mornings at 9:00 in the Centennial Room. Join Us for these insightful presentations and discussions as we grow together!

PRODIGAL: recklessly extravagant; giving or yielding profusely; lavishly abundant

Now that we know the meaning of the word, what does it mean for us, each other and God?

This Lent, your Adult Enrichment and Care & Calling ministries again join roots to present pastoral education opportunities. On Sunday mornings at 9:00, February 26-April 1, Adult Enrichment will read and discuss Timothy Keller’s book The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith.

On Thursday mornings, March 22, 29 and April 5, 10:30-12:00 Noon, Care & Calling’s co-leader, Fred Gougler will lead us in discussion of the late Henri Nouwen’s book The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming

Both books are about $10 and available at the Book Stall at Chestnut Court and on-line bookstores.

Volunteer to Read

In the new year, perhaps you would like to join with your friends and neighbors who are volunteering to read Scripture passages during worship each Sunday. We have compiled a wonderful group of readers, but the more the merrier. Contact Jodie Stewart, Liturgics Co-chair, 847-433-1783 to indicate your willingness to serve. Thanks very much.

Something is Cooking...

Please plan to have dinner with WCC’s High School Youth Group, Servants, on Shrove Tuesday, February 21st from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.

All proceeds will go to Servant’s Annual Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic. Mark your calendars. Servants would love to see YOU there!

Servants will be selling Mission Stock after morning worship on the following Sundays: 2/26, 3/4, 3/11, and 3/18. This is one investment that always yields great dividends.

We are happy to say...

Women's Retreat a Wonderful, Relaxing Experience

Ten women travelled to Holy Wisdom Monastery on Jan. 13-15 for a weekend retreat. A wonderful time was had by all. We shared together in discussion around different spiritual practices found in the book Soul Feast, by Marjorie Thompson. Together, with Pastor Jenny, we explored more deeply our understanding of hospitality, prayer and worship. We also were led in a yoga class and a few guided meditations by yoga teacher Anna Argeropoulos. The food was delicious; the grounds are beautiful; new friendships were made. We return with spirits rejuvenated!

*****

On January 11th, at CJ Arthurs in Wilmette, WCC members Jim Law and Scott Rodgers (pictured), Bob Ebersole and Brad McLane, joined with their "Band of Brothers" to raise over $2000 in their first benefit concert for Family Promise. Many of our friends and members were there in support and a good time was had by all. No injuries were reported. Yes, we will have them play some Sunday in worship once their repertoire expands beyond Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger. Thanks guys for your generosity.
