Thank You From Elaine

A very special "thank you" to all of those who helped make the 96th Christmas Pageant at WCC such a wonderful event this year.

Such a production takes a team of people working well together, and I am fortunate to have such a wonderful team.

Susan Snyder, producer, lined up parent volunteers and made sure that every one was at the right place at the right time, and came down the aisle at the right time.

Kay Benson, costume coordinator, once again produced exquisite costumes for the children to wear. Her creativity helps give us such a beautiful visual for the pageant.

Many parents volunteered to help with costumes, be with the children, and help things run smoothly.

Ray and Mark were invaluable in their assistance to everyone involved. They worked tirelessly to make sure that we have what we need when we need it.

Waldek always creates a beautiful pageant bulletin and is so patient through the entire process!

Jay Johnson, our choral intern, assisted at the rehearsals and directed the chancel choir during the pageant.

Thank you to Tau Zhang, our photographer, who each year documents our pageant with a lovely group photo of the cast.
You can see his photos from this year at http://www.lensworkgallery.com/p478482153
and make a photo purchase if you would like. Deadline for ordering on line is January 31.

And a huge thank you to the 115 children and youth who helped tell the story this year to a congregation of over 450 people! The cast was wonderful as they worked hard in one week of three rehearsals to learn all that they needed to know! I was very proud of each and every one of you and greatly appreciate the time and energy you put into being a part of the cast. Merry Christmas and I look forward to working with you next year as we present The 97th pageant.

Being WCC

Being Winnetka Congregational Church in 2012

What a wonderful Advent and Christmas Season; thank you for being a part of it. Given all that went on in worship, education, fellowship and outreach, it is easy to see we need a congregation to make it all happen. Without an engaged membership, there are no choirs, gift fairs, pageants, Christmas rummage, wish trees, fellowship events, etc.

As we enter a new year, could this be the time for you to get more involved? Could you help plan and lead at WCC? Might this be the time for you to unite in membership with Winnetka Congregational Church? Are you interested in learning more? Do you want to consider membership? Join Rev. Shank on Sunday, January 29th from 4 – 5:30 p.m. for a membership discussion session. Child care can be arranged. Contact Char@wcc-joinus.org to inquire and/or reserve a spot. We look forward to seeing you in 2012.

What Time Is It?

That depends. Are you using a solar, lunar or "church year" calendar? By church year time, Jesus grows up very quickly. Christmastide ends with Epiphany on January 6, the actual celebration of the Wise Men following the Bethlehem Star to Jesus and foiling Herod’s plot to kill him. With the second Sunday in the new calendar year and the sixth in the "church year", we find Jesus being baptized by John in the Jordan.

On the "Baptism of our Lord" Sunday, it has become our custom to celebrate the day with the renewal of our own baptismal vows. The liturgy for the morning allows us to focus on the sacrament of baptism and the grace and forgiveness we are offered by God. The worship service has become an important experience for many. We hope you will make every effort to attend. Who isn’t in need of a little forgiveness? See you at 10 a.m. on the eighth of January!

Family Promise
Move in January 8
Move out January 15

WCC will be the Family Promise host congregation again the week of January 8th. Family Promise is an opportunity for you to be a neighbor to families in homeless situations. This is an opportunity for "Hands-on" mission work for WCC members of all ages right in our WCC facilities. WCC hosts guest families 5:30 pm to 7 am, Sunday to Sunday. The WCC site coordinators, plan the logistics and supplies needed for the week, conduct orientations for our guest families, and provide support for WCC volunteers each night. Over 100 WCC members and children of all ages have already volunteered as dinner hosts, evening hosts, overnight hosts, and helped with move in and move out. When combined with volunteers from other congregations the power of the Family Promise network makes a big difference helping our guest families get back on their feet and into permanent housing. In a little over a year we have helped 10 families get back into permanent housing! The volunteer opportunities available are:

Dinner Host 5-7pm – prepare a meal for 2 guest families and volunteer family, eat together family style

Evening Host 7-9pm – help with homework, play games, or plan a craft or activity

Overnight host (2) 9pm-7am – spend the night on rollaway bed, set out quick breakfast in the morning

To volunteer, call or email: Brek Peterson (847-400-4123)

There is still time to pledge for 2012
