Creating Safe, Accepting and Respectful Schools

That’s the theme of to 2010 Summer Institute sponsored by the School of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago through its Family and School Partnership Program.
This decade has been difficult for schools in every way. New mandates have heightened academic pressures on students and teachers.  Families have experienced mounting economic concerns. Acts of violence and aggression have increased. In both urban and suburban schools, as well as their surrounding communities, these problems have created an atmosphere of anxiety for children, parents, and school professionals.
The 3-day 2010 Summer Institute (Wednesday, July 21 through Friday, July 23) will address these issues and empower you with new and creative ways to help your students, families, and schools cope with and grow from these challenging times.
Key note speakers are Patricia Arredondo, EdD and Margaret Weherenberg, PsyD, along with the following presenters: Georgia Boseday, EdD; Kerri Grossman, LCSW; Naomi Milstein, MSW, Elizabeth Perl, PhD; Verity Levitt Rodrigues, PhD; and Lindsay Schrand, School Psychologist.
Who should attend? Teachers, school administrators, school social workers, psychologists, and counselors. All are welcome.
Where? Loyola’s Water Tower Campus, 820 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago.

Family Promise Chicago North Shore seeks a (volunteer) Volunteer Coordinator

Family Promise Chicago North Shore (FPCNS) needs someone to make sure that all of our volunteer slots (about 15-40 hours per week) are filled on an on-going basis. This includes speaking to and/or e-mailing our volunteers, and filling out the monthly schedules. It does not require volunteer recruitment or volunteer management.

Perhaps you’ve already been volunteering for FPCNS and, knowing how rewarding it is, you want to get more involved with the organization.

Perhaps you’ve wished to volunteer, but the hours haven’t been right.

If you enjoy organizing, enjoy talking with people, and have basic computer skills, this could be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

For more information on FPCNS, visit www.fpcnorthshore.org

Community Renewal Society

I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.                                                                                                  --Matthew 25:36

WCC has enjoyed a long relationship with Community Renewal Society (CRS) over the years. WCC, as endorsed by our Council, provided in kind services to CRS this year by providing weekly supervisory hours to its two dual degree students. Most Tuesday mornings since last fall, our associate pastor, William Mueller who holds a license in clinical social work (LCSW), met in his church office with Mary Lynch-Dungy and Kristin Holm. These two first-year students are both enrolled in the master degree programs at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
Because of WCC’s timely service to CRS and its interns, they were involved in recent successes on behalf of their constituents.
Kristin served in CRS’s integral role in ground-breaking nursing home reform. The data analysis and reporting of The Chicago Reporter was utilized to highlight racial inequities in nursing home care and the subsequent activism of the Civic Action network in helping to draft SB685. If passed, the unprecedented legislation will provide adequate levels of nursing home care for all Illinois seniors, regardless of race, economic status, or geographic location.
Mary served in CRS’s significant win on behalf of children with incarcerated parents, a priority collaboration of CRS’s programmatic units. Through the continued reporting and data analysis of Catalyst Chicago and The Chicago Reporter and the tireless activism of CRS’s Civic Action network, the Illinois Department of Corrections has committed to CRS’s demands for improved visitation, transportation and re-entry policies affecting children with incarcerated parents.
In the coming academic year, William Mueller plans to provide similar supervisory time to Jennifer Hibben, another dual degree student at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Loyola University Chicago: School of Social Work. Jennifer will be working with The Night Ministry, another longtime WCC related-agency through our Woman’s Society Benevolence team.
