Cokie Roberts speaks about her newest book,
Ladies of Liberty:The Women Who Shaped Our Nation

Tuesday, May 20 n7PM nWCC Sanctuary

Admission free with a book purchase; additional tickets $5.

Cokie Roberts is a political commentator for ABC News and a senior news analyst for National Public Radio. From 1996 to 2002, she and Sam Donaldson co-anchored the weekly ABC interview program, This Week.

In addition to broadcasting, Roberts, along with her husband, Steven V. Roberts, writes a weekly column syndicated in newspapers around the country by United Media. Both are also contributing editors to USA Weekend, and together they wrote From This Day Forward, an account of their now more than forty-year marriage and other marriages in American history. The book immediately went onto the New York Times best-seller list, following a six-month run on the list by Roberts’s first book on women on American history, We Are Our Mother’s Daughters. Roberts is also the author of the bestselling Founding Mothers, the companion volume to Ladies of Liberty. A mother of two and grandmother of six, she lives with her husband in Bethesda, Maryland.

In Founding Mothers, Cokie Roberts paid homage to the women who helped establish our nation. Now the number one New York Times bestselling author and renowned political commentator-praised in USA Today as a “custodian of time-honored values”--continues the story of early America’s influential women with Ladies of Liberty. In her “delightfully intimate and confiding” style (Publisher Weekly), Roberts presents a colorful blend of biographical portraits and behind-the-scenes vignettes chronicling women’s public roles and private responsibilities.

Recounted with the insight and humor of an expert storyteller and drawing on personal correspondence, private journals, and other primary sources--many of them previously unpublished--Roberts brings to life the extraordinary accomplishments of women who laid the groundwork for a better society. Almost every quotation here is written by a woman, to a woman, or about a woman. From first ladies to freethinkers, educators to explorers, this exceptional group includes Abigail Adams, Margaret Bayard Smith, Martha Jefferson, Dolley Madison, Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Catherine Adams, Eliza Hamilton, Theodosia Burr, Rebecca Gratz, Louisa Livingston, Rosalie Calvert, Sacajawea, and others. In a much-needed addition to the shelves of Founding Father literature, Roberts sheds new light on the generation of heroines, reformers, and visionaries who helped shape our nation, giving these ladies of liberty the recognition they so greatly deserve.

CRITICAL NEED

WCC has partnered with the Good News Community Kitchen for over a decade to provide a hot, nutritious meal to those who need it. Members of our congregation always enjoy volunteering - whether providing food or serving the meal itself. We have had some difficulty lately getting enough volunteers to manage this commitment. Please consider volunteering this summer. The dates are: June 2, July 7 and August 4. Check your calendars and contact Laurie Peterson at 847-251-7240 or bpete12392@aol.com.

The Woman’s Society cordially invites you to a very special luncheon and program at 12:00 on Wednesday, May 14, in Tolman Hall.

Dr. Robert Harris, our own Director of Music/Choirmaster, will present a very special program, entitled “Composing Music for the Church.”

Dr. Harris received his doctorate degree in composition and theory from Michigan State University and was a member of the faculty there for seven years prior to coming to Northwestern University in 1977, where he presently holds the position of Professor of Conducting and Director of Choral Organizations as a member of the faculty of the NU School of Music.

As a published composer, Robert has been the recipient of numerous commissions from various schools, churches and musical organizations and his works are in the catalogues of some of the world’s leading publishers. He has served as a guest professor at Wayne State University, the University of Texas (Austin) and the University of South Africa in Pretoria. He has served as a guest conductor and choral clinician throughout the United States as well as in Europe, South Korea, the Republic of China, Hong Kong, South Africa and in Argentina.

Church music has always been an important part of his life and Dr. Harris has held several positions at various churches wherever he has lived. His most recent, prior to joining us at WCC, was at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmette, where he served as choirmaster from 1978 until 2004.

You won’t want to miss this wonderful program by Dr. Harris! Come and share the warmth of good friends and beautiful music, and don’t forget to bring a friend with you! Please call Eileen Baumgarten, 847-446-3442, or e-mail her at randeileen@aol.com, by Monday, May 12, with reservations. Luncheon cost is $13.00. Let Eileen know if you need a ride or child care for this or any of our programs, as we are happy to arrange this free of charge for those who need it. Also, please notify Eileen by Monday if you need to cancel your reservation.
