A Special Goodbye

3 Mission Trips, 9 retreats, 3 pancake suppers, 2 confirmation classes, a number of sermons, 6 Youth Sunday’s and much, much more. It is hard to sum up all the ways Joshua Sawyer has inspired and ministered to and with our faith community these past 3 years.

On Sunday June 6 during worship we will say a special goodbye to Josh Sawyer, our Director for Youth Ministries for the past 3 years. Following the service there will be a reception for Josh and his wife Lexi. We hope you will come and thank Josh for his service to WCC and wish him well as he and Lexi prepare for their move to Omaha. If you would like to contribute to a gift for Josh, you can send a check to WCC with a note that it is for Josh.

WCC hosted families in homeless situations for the first time the week of Sunday April 25th. Our guest family was very comfortable in one of our 2nd floor church school rooms for the week and some heavenly meals were prepared in our kitchen. Tolman and Alsdorf made great places for our hosts and guests to play games, watch a movie, read, or just talk. Our site Coordinators, Harry Grace and Nicole Jakob planned the logistics and supplies needed for the week as well as orientation for our guest family and volunteers each night. Over 60 WCC members and children of all ages volunteered as dinner hosts, evening hosts, overnight hosts, and helped with move in and move out. The caring and hospitality provided made a real difference in the lives of our guest family who left a nice  note to the congregation:
Family Promise is a 501c3 non-profit agency made up of a network of North Shore congregations that hosts 3-4 families in homeless situations in their facilities from 5pm – 7am three to four times per year, for one week at a time, providing overnight lodging, evening homework help and activities, meals (Dinner, quick breakfast, and brownbag lunch), and hospitality. Guest families are picked up at the host congregation at 7am and driven to the Family Promise Day Center in Evanston to get ready for work and school and to work with our network director to find permanent housing.

WCC will host again the week of May 23rd, and will be hosting two families this time. We will not be hosting again until Late August or September.
The volunteer opportunities available are:
   • Dinner Host 5-7pm – prepare a meal for 2 guest families and volunteer family, eat together family style
   • Evening Host 7-9pm – help with homework, play games, or plan a craft or activity
   • Overnight host (2) 9pm-7am – spend the night on rollaway bed, set out quick breakfast in the morning

This is an opportunity for “Hands-on” mission work for WCC members of all age’s right in our WCC facilities! To volunteer, call or email Brek Peterson (847-400-4123) or bpeterson@ralcorpfrozen.com.
