Our shared ministries include hands-on support to help people move out of poverty, working together in a soup kitchen, holiday outings to serve meals to the homeless, environmental workdays in the forest preserve, and trips to Guatemala to build community for some of the world's poorest people.
Our Woman's Society's annual rummage sale, a 100 year old tradition, donates over $200,000 a year to non-profits throughout the Chicago area.
We seek to be a transforming presence throughout our community, but we often find that we are also transformed by breaking down the barriers that divide people.

In 1990 on the recommendation of the Volunteer Task Force, Church Council
established the annual practice of honoring members of WCC who have been
outstanding volunteers.
The award was named for Wilfrid Helms in recognition of his long years of quiet,
patient, daily effective service as a volunteer in the church office doing our
internal auditing and bookkeeping. His exemplary service has been an inspiration
to many, and the award in his honor is to thank publicly those others who
continue the tradition of being outstanding volunteers.
Each year Council groups are invited to submit nominations. The nominees may be
a member of a group, a participant in one of its programs, or anyone whom the
group wishes to nominate for the honor. While the number of award winners has
varied over the years, our recent practice is to limit it to two a year.
