When the strategic plan process started, I had no idea where it would take us. Skeptically I thought it was something we would create and then it would sit on a shelf for the next 10 years. Right away the strategic planning committee was about something more though. I was so excited to see the energy from this great, diverse group of members. And they started putting in A LOT of time. It was clear from the start that these were folks who were very invested in the future of this church. Which shouldn’t surprise me…as one of your pastors for over 8 years now I know what a passionate, engaged group of go-getters this congregation has. So, as the process picked up momentum, I was hooked.
This summer, I spent many hours with various members of WCC in meetings and phone calls brainstorming and planning for this fall. We want this Phase 2 to spread the excitement. We want members to feel newly engaged in some way – through different styles of worship, meaningful small group conversations, fun get togethers with each other, personal faith deepening devotionals, enriching adult learning opportunities, transformative service projects.
We have heard the statistics…mainline protestant churches are dying. They aren’t considered relevant. People have other things to do on Sunday morning. Folks want to be spiritual but not religious. We are busy, busy, busy. But what if WCC was a place where…
you encountered the most holy and mysterious God?
you felt God’s spirit and saw Christ’s teachings in action?
you developed deep friendships and had meaningful conversations?
your ideas were expanded, challenged, encouraged, prodded?
your questions were always welcomed and doubts were seen as a way your faith grows?
You were supported, loved, accepted, valued? And so were your children…for just who you are.
You were able to participate in work that made a clear and transformative difference in the world for the better?
Wouldn’t that feel relevant? Wouldn’t that be something to make time for? Wouldn’t that be something you’d want to invite your friends to join?
In some ways we are already this place…many of you feel that. But we know we can do even more, be more and come together in new ways. So…join us…get involved…think about how this place can make a difference in your life and how you can make a difference in the world through being a part of it. Consider how you want a place like this to exist for your children and grandchildren and beyond. We are only as strong as the number of threads in our fabric….
Weave yourself into the fabric of WCC…the more threads, the stronger the fabric.
