As the name implies, service is an important part of what we do as a group. Every year we dedicate time to service projects in the North Shore, in the city of Chicago, and internationally on our mission trip. In the North Shore, Servants work with other churches to help stock the local food pantry; we also partner with Erika’s Lighthouse to create awareness about teen depression. In the city of Chicago, the Servants group plays an integral role in Winnetka Congregational Church’s annual Wish Tree event--when the congregation provides over 300 kids Christmas gifts that they wouldn’t receive otherwise--and travels to the Good News Community Church in order to provide snacks and a warm atmosphere for the families to pick up their gifts. In the city of Chicago, we also dedicate our time to serve with the Night Ministry in Uptown and A Just Harvest in Rogers Park in order to help feed some of the poor and homeless population. Also as a group we travel internationally once a year to serve a community, the last two years we have gone to the town of Gaspar Hernandez, which is located along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. There, we partner with the Evangelical Church of Gaspar Hernandez in building a community center where people have access to clean drinking water, kids receive an education, and where the community meets for church.
Beyond Service, Servants is also a place for the youth to explore their faith. Especially on the fall retreat at Saugatuck, Michigan and our mission trip we make time to think about our beliefs and take time to discuss and articulate who this God we hear about is. As a result of these extended discussions, twice a year the youth lead the congregation in worship. At that time the youth share what God is doing in their life and inspire the people of Winnetka Congregational Church to look at their faith in new and invigorating ways. The youth explore their faith not only on the mission trip or the fall retreat, but on a weekly basis on Monday nights at the church from 6:30-8:00 p.m. when we check in with one another, play a game, and discuss some topic related to our faith. Also, on Sundays after church the youth often take time to discuss the sermon that was shared or talk about some practice or issue pertaining to our faith.
Servants is also a place for youth to have fun with one another and bond as a group. Whether it is playing cards or ultimate Frisbee with one another, going to a movie or bowling, playing laser tag or whirly ball, enjoying a lock-in or a progressive dinner, going on a camping trip or a trip to a theme park or even a cubs game, we make sure that we create an atmosphere where we are able to cut loose and have some fun with one another. We meet at the church in the Servants room on Sunday nights from 4:30-6:00. We hope you will come and be a part of the group this week. Also check out the Servants links to see our calendar, mission trip blog, youth Sunday sermons, and picture galore.
